The constitution developed by Syrian, Arab, and Russian legal experts and proposed for Syria is rather controversial, as the Syrian government and opposition leaders have a number of questions to ask and resolve.
The analysis shows a very complicated situation around this document, as the constitution draft scraps Article 3, which specifies Islam as the religion of the president of the republic. Therefore, Arab nationalists criticize the new charter as it changes the name of the country from the ‘Syrian Arab Republic’ to ‘Syrian Republic’. It may be the most important issue of arguing for now.
The new Constitution also recognizes the Kurdish language as one of the official in Syria that pleased the Kurds and caused much criticism in Damascus and even Turkey. To sum up, the document keeps all sides satisfied and angry at the same time.
Finally, the document stays rather controversial and is expected to cause further negotiations and developing new joint projects of Constitution.
