Proposals On Syria’s Constitution To Be Taken Into Account At Geneva Talks

Moscow does not rule out that some Russian proposals will be taken into consideration while discussing the new Syrian constitution in Geneva, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, told a press briefing on Thursday.

“We do not rule out that, while discussing the issue of the new constitution, some elements of Russian ideas that have been proposed to the parties will be discussed,” she said, adding that the UN oversees the agenda of the Geneva talks.

“If they are discussed, we will be only too glad that they were useful,” Zakharova noted.

“It is very important how the political settlement is moving, its beginning, its progress,” the diplomat went on to say. “We are very optimistic, because the mere fact that this is a political settlement, when representative of the opposition and the Syrian government sit at the negotiating table, the mere fact that these talks began seemed utterly impossible just six months ago. Now all this is being implemented not only in theory but in practice as well.”

She noted, however, that work aimed at derailing this political settlement is very active.” “If the relevant players used their efforts with regard to the Syrian settlement just as actively, I believe we would have forgotten about the Syrian settlement a long time ago, and very good results would have been achieved,” Zakharova noted.

“Unfortunately, now these enormous efforts are aimed at blocking the political settlement that has been launched with considerable difficulty,” she said.
