UN Envoy: Syrian Kurds Should Participate In Elaborating New Constitution

Syria’s Kurds should not be ignored, and their representatives must be allowed to take part in drafting the country’s new constitution, UN envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura said.

The United Nations has hosted two sets of technical talks on the constitution with the various Syrian opposition groups, in Lausanne, in recent weeks, Western diplomats say.

Concerning the Kurds, they were the first who proposed their own variant of the draft new constitution demanding to respect their ethnic and cultural autonomy. Nevertheless, this document wasn’t widely discussed as the main warring sides in Syria hadn’t found the common ground on other issues during the talks.
