Eastern Ghouta Ceasefire: New Checkpoints Open After Peace Deal

After a successful demarcating the safe zone in Eastern Ghouta by Russia’s military and Syria’s rebel groups near Damascus, a joint checkpoint manned by Russian and Syrian military personnel has opened there.

At least two checkpoints and four monitoring posts have been deployed there. Russian and Syrian military officers search motor vehicles for weapons and ammunition and check the identification documents of drivers and passengers.

Reports say some 9,000 militants affiliated with different groups, mostly Nusra-linked, outlawed in Russia may be roaming the area.
