Iran’s Rouhani, Russia’s Putin Discuss Syria on Phone

The president of Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani had a telephone conversation with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Monday. The sides discussed the current situation in Syria.

The two leaders highly praised the results of the 6th International Meeting on Syria in Astana on September 14–15, 2017, primarily in terms of establishing four de-escalation zones. Both sides expressed readiness for further joint efforts in the interests of achieving a long-term settlement of the Syrian crisis, in particular by strengthening cooperation between the guarantor countries of the Astana process and promoting political negotiations under the auspices of the UN in Geneva.
