Moscow supports the proposal of Staffan de Mistura, the UN’s special envoy for Syria, on establishing a consultative mechanism on Syria’s constitution, Russian Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Friday.
The delegation of the Syrian government in Geneva, headed by Bashar Jaafari, presented a set of questions to UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura related to the issue of governance – the so-called first basket of discussions at the intra-Syrian talks.
Syrian peace talks in Kazakhstan closed on Wednesday without any substantive negotiations taking place, after rebels boycotted the meeting that took place as a deadly double suicide bombing marked the start of the civil war’s seventh year.
Head of the Syrian delegation to the 3rd round of Astana talks Bashar al-Jaafari stressed keenness on the success of Astana track, and on that the talks will reach the safe side in a way that would serve Syria’s higher national interests whether the armed factions participated in the talks or not.
The Syrian government delegation has accused the main opposition group at UN-led negotiations of holding the talks “hostage” in their final hours, adding that it would hold the opposition responsible for any failure.
Syrian government negotiator Bashar Jaafari told reporters that he had discussed “substantive issues, particularly counter-terrorism” with U.N. mediator Staffan de Mistura, and would continue on 3 March.
